Here's a draft of a rationale for the project, put together after the first meeting in Brunswick:
Rationale:
In undertaking this project, students will learn of the role of the local population in the Civil War. They will also learn of the importance that documentation plays in building a local history.
The project involves cataloging and data storage - students will need to investigate, analyze and decide upon the best system for this, either in existence or to be created by the students.
The cataloging itself will involve investigating and experimenting with the methods of digital recording of different types of historical document.
By opening the collection for commentary and discussion from users, history becomes an interactive process - new learning and interpretation becomes possible.
Generating media interest in the project is another area of learning involved in this project. Students will investigate how media / information outlets handle projects of this kind.
This is to get us started in concretizing focus and purpose - edit away!
Also, an overview hammered out before the project meetings began - meant to be refined, deleted or added to:
Overview:
Students will:
- produce digital copies of historical documents from local Historical Society and libraries
- catalog copies and build searchable database;
- create safe storage;
- create opportunities for access by interested users
- create opportunities for users to comment, reflect on and discuss the collection
- generate interest via local media/information sources
Let's use this first page to gather thoughts about the focus of the program
